What is the difference between gold weave and single weave in jiu jitsu gis?
I’m trying to figure out what the different weaves are good for….
I have an Atama Gold Weave and would highly recommend you get it if you can afford it. It will pay for itself later.
There are 2 main types of Gis:
Single Weave and Double Weave. A single weave is thinner and lighter and is also sometimes called a summer Gi because people like to wear them in the summer so they don’t sweat as much. The downsize is they don’t last nearly as long and shrink easier. The upside is they are cheaper, lighter and less restricting so you don’t sweat as much. A double weave Gi is thicker and stronger than a single. If you are doing a lot of takedowns and especially throws you should get a double weave. The downside is they are more expensive because they use more material and are hotter than single weaves and take longer to dry out. The upside is they last longer and are very unlikely to ever tear. Like I said they are also good for throws and takedowns.
Now there is a Gold Weave. Gold Weave is a term to describe a nice Gi that is actually a mixture of a single and double weave. Some companies call them different things such as Pearl Weave or Platinum Weave, stuff like that. They are lighter than a double weave but practically just as strong. They last a very long time and are of the highest quality. However, because of this they are more expensive than both single and double weaves. Like I said I have an Atama Gold weave and it is a beautiful Gi and is holding up great.
