what type of balance of power system best maintains international stability: a unipolar system, a bipolar system or a multipolar system?
you forgot one. in each uni, bi, and multipolar relations nations have influence in military, cultural and economic aspect of another. No nation should have a particularly high influence over any other than when it comes to such accountability issues as torture for example because this would effect the friendship between the country. Other than that every country should have absolute dominance over their own military, culture etc. this way everyone can get on with their own thing.
However, this doesn’t mean that each country is isolated. friendships and alliances can still be made. multi-alliances too may be made like the U.N. (specific issues about it aside) to ensure that if another major war broke out these certain countries would unit, also acting somewhat as a deterrent. This doesn’t contradict what I’ve previously said because it doesn’t have an influence over the culture, economy and it only has an influence over military with agreed circumstances.
In conclusion what I’m talking about is closer, but not precisely, non-polarity. This way international relationships, alliances, trade (even free trade) can be not only stable but near solid without other countries assuming any kind of influence over others with the exception of issues that concern the friendships etc in the way of internationally unlawful behaviour eg. torture, war crimes etc.
